Free PDF Suite Overview

BMO PDF Suite is a free PDF suite and desktop PDF editor named after BMO from Adventure Time: green, friendly, playful, and quietly powerful. The goal is a better Acrobat-style experience for everyday PDF jobs — modern, fast, local-first, secure, and delightful to use.

  • View, annotate, and edit PDF documents natively in a free PDF editor
  • Use the current open document as the source for every tool — no awkward drag-and-drop workflow
  • Merge, split, reorder, delete, extract, rotate, crop, optimize, convert, flatten, watermark, redact, and Bates-number PDFs
  • Install from the Windows installer, Linux Debian package, or macOS disk image

Core Viewer Features

  • High-fidelity PyMuPDF rendering at any DPI
  • Smooth zoom, scroll, fit page, and fit width
  • Single page, continuous, two-page, and book-fold views
  • Fullscreen reading mode
  • Night, sepia, and high-contrast modes
  • Lazy-loaded thumbnails and clickable outlines
  • Bookmarks saved in .bmo sidecar files
  • Full-text search with highlights, regex, and case-sensitive modes

Free PDF Editor and Page Tools

Use one free PDF app for the PDF jobs people search for most: editing pages, marking up documents, merging PDFs, splitting PDFs, protecting files, converting documents, and exporting what you need.

  • Edit existing text where the PDF allows it
  • Insert movable text boxes with font, size, color, and weight controls
  • Insert, resize, move, rotate, and replace images
  • Merge another PDF at a chosen insertion point
  • Split documents and optionally auto-save split files
  • Drag-and-drop thumbnail reordering
  • Delete and extract selected pages with undo support
  • Apply common page tools like crop, compress, convert, flatten, watermark, redaction, and Bates numbering without leaving the app

Annotations and Forms

BMO supports PDF-native annotations compatible with Adobe and other readers: highlight, underline, strikethrough, sticky notes, freehand drawing, shapes, stamps, links, callouts, and annotation erasing. The sidebar annotation list shows author, date, type, page, and comments. It also supports AcroForms and supported XFA rendering, field filling, tab navigation, reset, save, and import/export as JSON, XML, or FDF.

Security and Trust

  • AES-256 document encryption with user and owner passwords
  • Permission controls for printing, copying, editing, annotations, form filling, and accessibility
  • Digital signature insertion and validation
  • Two-step redaction workflow with irreversible warning
  • .bmo sidecar audit logs in AppData
  • SHA-256 file integrity checks on open
  • Auto-lock for protected documents
  • Secure Clipboard auto-clear option

Layout and Workflow

BMO uses a custom frameless window with BMO-green title chrome, a menu bar for File, Home, Edit, Annotate, Security, Tools, and View, a left sidebar for thumbnails, bookmarks, layers, attachments, and comments, a contextual right panel for active tools, and a bottom status bar for page count, zoom, file size, modified state, and encryption status.

Tech Stack

For technical readers: BMO uses Python, PyQt6, PyMuPDF, pypdf, reportlab, cryptography, optional Tesseract OCR, and installer packaging.

Why use an offline PDF editor?

Many free online PDF editors make you upload files before you can edit, merge, split, convert, redact, or annotate them. BMO PDF Suite is built for people who would rather keep invoices, forms, scans, client documents, and personal files on their own computer.

  • Work locally on Windows, Linux, or macOS instead of sending PDFs to a browser upload tool
  • Use one free PDF suite for viewing, editing, annotations, page cleanup, conversion, redaction, and security
  • Keep a familiar desktop workflow for repeated office, school, home, and small-business PDF tasks

BMO PDF Suite vs online PDF editors

Online PDF editors are useful for quick one-off edits, but they are not always the best fit for private documents or repeated desktop work. BMO is positioned as a free Adobe Acrobat alternative for common PDF tasks: view, edit, annotate, merge, split, convert, secure, redact, compress, and organize PDFs from a local app.

  • Free PDF editor for Windows
  • Free PDF editor for Linux
  • Free PDF editor for macOS
  • No browser upload required for normal local workflows
  • PDF merge, split, convert, redact, and annotate tools in one suite
